NOT SKIP’ project - “Skills for Democracy” training took place in Italy
The ‘Skills for Democracy’ training course took place in the city of Taurisano, Italy, from 7 to 10 May. This was one of the actions, specifically the second international meeting of the ‘NOT SKIP: Network of Organisations for Promoting Skills for Participation’ project, organised by the coordinating body of this European project, of which AJITER is a member, the ‘Fattoria Pugliese Diffusa APS’.
This training event - which AJITER attended with a delegation made up of five participants from both Terceira and São Jorge islands - aimed to train multipliers with skills that will enable them to contribute to improving democratic participation in the communities where they work, namely by promoting awareness-raising activities that can better involve and empower citizens in democratic participation.
This project is being carried out under the CERV programme, financed by the European Union's fund for Justice, Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) and will run for two years until 2026. Its action plan includes various conferences and other actions whose fundamental aim is to promote skills for civic participation among the population.
This international event, which was attended by 30 representatives of the 6 nationalities that make up the project, as well as around 150 young students from local schools, focused on sharing good practices and local projects promoting democratic participation from the various countries involved in the project. There was also time for technical coordination of the whole project and its action plan, as well as contact with the local reality in the political, social, historical, cultural and economic spheres.
It should also be noted that ‘Europe Day’, which is celebrated on 9 May, was also commemorated.
As part of the delegation, the President of AJITER, Décio Santos, had the opportunity to present the institution to those present, as well as to publicise the ‘Carnival of Terceira Island’ and the ‘Philharmonic Bands’ as good practices of democratic participation and intervention in the Azores.
This project has a consortium of 6 entities and is coordinated by the organisation Fattoria Pugliese Diffusa APS (Italy) with the participation, as already mentioned, of the Youth Association of Terceira Island - AJITER (Portugal), Musninkų kaimo bendruomenė (Lithuania), the Municipality of Fyli (Greece), Asociatia Nameless Art (Romania) and the Local Action Group ‘Dolina Rzeki Grabi’ (Poland).
