AJITER took the “TEXTIL” project to the Environment Fair
AJITER – Associação Juvenil da Ilha Terceira (Terceira Island Youth Association) was once again present at the “Environment Fair” – this time the seventh edition – an event organised by the Praia da Vitória City Council, which took place on 3, 4 and 5 June in Praia da Vitória, marking World Environment Day.
At this event, which aimed to raise awareness among children and young people aged between 3 and 18 about the importance of environmental preservation and protection, AJITER focused on content related to the ‘TEXTIL’ project, which is dedicated to raising awareness of the current problem of textile waste, with a focus on strategies that can promote its mitigation and circularity.
AJITER developed various recreational and educational activities stratified by the age group of the participants.
The ‘TEXTIL - Developing a Sustainable Future: Promoting the Circular Economy in the Textile Sector’ project is part of the INTERREG MAC 2021-2027 community programme and is being promoted by AJITER and a consortium made up of various entities from the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands.
The problem of textile waste is a growing environmental challenge, especially due to the large volume of discarded clothing and the pollution associated with its production and disposal. In Portugal, around 200,000 tonnes of textile waste are thrown away every year, representing 4% of urban waste. This problem has significant implications, from taking up space in landfills to soil and water pollution.
